A New Author Discovered

For those of you interested in mysteries, I've discovered a really good series written by an Irish author named Cora Harrison. She wrote about life in Ireland in the 1500's in a village called The Burren. It centers around a brehon (judge) named Mara and King Turlough Donn O'Brien. Because I don't study ancient Ireland I must admit I don't know how historically accurate the series is, but I just love the stories. If someone who studies Ireland could please let me know how accurate these books are, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks for sharing this new find. I may have to give it a try sometime. I love reading Historical Fiction. So I guess you would maybe call this series 'Historical Mysteries'.... ?

For more mysteries, check out Poison Pen Press.

Dev the Baker, the proprietor, sells medieval mysteries, as well as a very nice assortment of A&S books. She introduced me to a number of medieval mystery series, most notably the Sister Frevisse books, which are set in 15th century England. There's a spinoff series from these involving a company of players traveling England at the same time. Both are very well-researched AND a lot of fun to read. I've also bought mysteries from her set in ancient rome and medieval Spain.

I'll also recommend a seni-modern mystery to any who haven't rwad it, MURDER AT THE WAR, which is set at Pennsic. It was written in the late '80s, early '90s, so it's a much smaller Pennsic, but it's Pennsic nontheless. Things get interesting when a not too popular knight is found stabbed to death during the Woods Battle.

The author, Monica Pulver, was Midrealm A&S Minister at the time. She also wrote a couple of other mysteries featuring the married coupe who are the main characters in MURDER AT THE WAR, but the SCA is only peripherally involved in these.

Like I said, Dev also has a lot of very good craft books. Her specialties seem to be cooking/brewing and garb, but there's a lot of other stuff, too.

For the record, I've known Dev for almost forty years and count her as a friend as well as a good source of reading materials. If you're going to Pennsic, she'll be one of the ones in the "Bookseller's Row."
